Remember when we talked about ATRI's annual survey and asked truckers to share what they believed was the biggest problem facing the industry? Well, the results are finally in, and there's been a big change. After three consecutive years at the top, the economy has dropped to sixth place, while fuel prices have jumped 17 spots to become trucking's number one concern.
The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) collected nearly 3,100 responses from drivers, carriers and other industry professionals. For the first time in the survey's history, fuel prices also ranked as the top concern among truck drivers.
With diesel climbing above $6.50 per gallon, it's not hard to see why. Higher fuel costs are eating into profits, especially for owner-operators and smaller carriers. The pressure is spreading beyond trucking too. The Federal Reserve's Beige Book highlighted a grocery company reporting that transporting lettuce from California had become more expensive than the lettuce itself.
Other concerns haven't disappeared. Lawsuit abuse reform ranked second overall, followed by CSA, insurance costs and driver shortage. But the results also revealed an interesting difference: carrier executives ranked lawsuit abuse reform first, while drivers prioritized fuel prices, truck parking and compensation.
Truck parking even dropped out of the overall top 10 for the first time since 2012, despite remaining one of the biggest daily challenges for drivers. It's a reminder that what worries the industry as a whole doesn't always reflect what truckers experience behind the wheel.
ATRI's results show how quickly trucking's priorities can change. The economy may no longer hold the top spot, but rising fuel costs are creating new challenges for drivers and carriers trying to keep their operations profitable.
The real question now is—
do you agree that fuel prices are trucking's biggest problem right now, or is something else affecting you even more?
